Update 11/04/2025- The ETIAS will begin operations in the last quarter of 2026. We will update this page as we learn more.
An ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) travel authorisation will be required from the last quarter of 2026.
The new control will be a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt, non-EU nationals travelling to any one of 30 European countries using the ETIAS. This includes freight drivers.
The ETIAS travel authorisation is also linked to the traveller’s passport.
How should freight drivers apply for ETIAS?
To apply for an ETIAS, you will need to fill out the application form on the ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile app.
“When filling out the application, you will be asked to provide the following information:
- Personal information including your name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents’ first names, email address and phone number;
- Travel document details;
- Details about your level of education and current occupation;
- Details about your intended travel and stay in any of the countries requiring ETIAS;
- Details about any criminal convictions, any past travels to war or conflict zones, and whether you have recently been subject of a decision requiring you to leave the territory of any country.”
How much does it cost to apply for ETIAS?
The application will cost EUR7 for most travellers, with some being exempt.
You may be exempt if you are:
- Under 18 or over 70 years old
- A family member of an EU citizen
- A non-EU national with the right to move freely through the EU
What happens next?
Once you have completed and submitted your application, you should receive a decision within four days. Typically, ETIAS applications take minutes to process, but there are factors that might make it take longer.
For instance, if you are required to provide any additional information, the process may take as long as 14 days. If you are invited to an interview, it may take as long as 30 days.
Once you have arrived at the border, border guards will check that you have the correct documentation. This includes the document used in your ETIAS application.
It is important to note that receipt of your ETIAS does not guarantee you entry to the country you are travelling to. You will still need to adhere to any other relevant travel regulations. Learn more on the Europa.eu website.
How long is the ETIAS valid for?
An ETIAS travel authorisation is valid for either:
- three years
- or until the travel document used in the application expires
Whichever is sooner.
Once you have used your ETIAS, it will only allow you to stay in the applicable country for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180-days. You may leave and return multiple times within this period, but you must adhere to these requirements.
While travelling, it is important to keep hold of your ETIAS for the duration of your stay.
What is an ETA?
From the 2nd of April 2025, EU nationals will need to provide an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) when visiting the UK. This will also impact freight drivers/hauliers.
